The community of Cobh was deeply effected by the May 1915 sinking of Cunard Line's Lusitania. 1,153 passengers and crew drowned and Cobh sailors recovered many bodies. This memorial was constructed to commemorate that event that haunts the community. Cunard's former offices still stand in Cobh.
